talking calmly
into the void

Technology as it is now, read against the way it started.

About

Talking Calmly Into the Void is a weekly essay about modern technology and the machines it was copied from.

The premise is simple. Almost nothing in current computing is new, and the parts that feel new usually have a legible ancestor in the era when hardware was large enough to be photographed. Time-sharing, notifications, prediction, thin clients, remote storage: each of them was built once already, under harder constraints, by people who wrote it all down.

So the format is a pairing. Something current, read next to its origin, with the manuals and the industrial design taken as seriously as the specifications. No product reviews, no funding news, no predictions.

It is written by one person, published most Mondays, and set in type on purpose.
